Practice Problems: Local Extrema

Consider the function $f(x) = \sage {p1f1disp}$

We know that $f(x)$ has some kind of extrema at $x=\sage {p1xgiven}$ Use the second derivative test to determine if this extrema is a maximum or minimum. If it is a maximum, enter $1$ into the following box, and if it is a minimum, enter $0$ . $\answer {\sage {p1ans1}}$

Recall that the second derivative test says that if $f''\left (\sage {p1xgiven}\right )$ is less than zero then it is a maximum, but if it is greater than zero it is a minimum. Notice that this also means you don’t need to actually factor the second derivative - you just need to calculate it at $\sage {p1xgiven}$ and see if it is positive or negative.

Remember you need to plug the value into the original function, not one of the derivatives, to get the extrema value.
