¹The notation “ $\Delta x$ ” represents the finite but small width of a rectangle. The notation “ $dx$ ” represents the infinitesimal width of a rectangle and cannot be thought of strictly as 0! This results from the area procedure the number of rectangles whose areas we must add increases simultaneously without bound as the widths of each rectangle becomes arbitrarily close to 0!
